About this coin

The second Roman Emperor to rule during the time of Jesus, Tiberius was both step-son and son-in-law to Caesar Augustus. Tiberius eventually was adopted by Augustus when he ran out of heirs. He ascended to the throne without controversy when Augustus died and ruled well during a prosperous period in Roman history. He later tired of the intrigues of palace life and spent the last 11 years of his reign on Caprae (Capri). The obverse of this silver denarius includes a portrait of Tiberius with the words "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS," naming Tiberius son of the divine Augustus. The reverse shows a seated female historically identified as Livia, Tiberius' mother, dressed as Pax and surrounded by the words "PONTIF MAXIM."
