About this coin

The adopted son of celebrated Roman ruler Hadrian, Antoninus Pius came from an important family in Gaul; in fact, several generations of men in his family had served as Consuls. Often referred to as one of "the Five Good Rulers of Rome," he ruled in peace for his more than 20 years on the throne. Any foreign rebellions were handled by others, as Antoninus Pius chose never to leave Rome. The 900th anniversary of Rome's founding was celebrated during his reign, and he issued special coins for the occasion. This silver denarius features a bust of the emperor with a laurel wreath encircling his head on the obverse; a goddess with an agricultural theme is shown on the reverse.
