About this coin

This silver denarius, minted during the Republic period and pre-dating the Roman Empire, was most likely first in the hands of a roman soldier. Representing a day's pay for a soldier, the silver denarius became the base unit of measure for the accepted monetary system in the ancient world. This particular coin features the helmeted head of Roma (the goddess who personified Rome) and the word "FLAC" on the obverse and Victory driving a two-horse chariot called a biga with the phrase "L RVTILLI" on the reverse.
