About this coin

For the people of ancient Rome, much of life revolved around the gods and goddesses. But the goddess Roma, who personified the glorious city, held a particularly special appeal for citizens. The silver denarius pictured here, from around 100 B.C., illustrates their ideal of Roma wearing a helmet and ready for battle. The reverse continues the theme, featuring Victory riding a chariot and poised to engage in combat as well. The coin was struck during the Roman Republican period, which preceded the establishment of the Roman Empire.
