About this coin

For Romans, Janus represented the beginning and the end, which is why he's often portrayed with two heads back to back. He was worshipped at integral life transitions: births, deaths, during shifts between war and peace, and as children grew. Janus was a popular image on Roman coins, and his appearance changed over the years. At first, only one of his heads had a beard, while the other was bare. And around 300 years after this particular coin was struck, he appeared with four heads. This silver denarius, minted around 100 BC, features a two-headed Janus with a laurel wreath on the obverse. The reverse includes a depiction of Roma with a trophy to the left and her name to the right.
