Byzantine Gold Coin with Christ on Throne (913-959 A.D.)

An exclusive statement of faith. About 900 years after the death of Jesus, this solid gold solidus was minted in Constantinople and circulated in the Byzantine Empire. Because it was so valuable in its time, this rare coin has come through the ages in pristine condition, dazzling in its beauty and luster. The 14k solid gold setting brilliantly complements the gold coin it displays. The coin offers two equally dramatic views: one side features Christ on a throne holding the Gospel; the other side is a portrayal of co-emperors Constantine VII and Romanus II. Few pieces of jewelry would be as meaningful for both history buffs and people of faith.

About this coin

This stunning gold coin was minted in Constantinople during the reign of Constantine VII and his son, Romanus II (913-959 AD). Constantine VII spent much of his life in scholarly pursuit and may have died via poison at the hand of his son and co-emperor. The obverse of the coin features an image of Christ on the throne holding the Gospel in his left hand. The reverse includes the figures of co-emperors Constantine VII and Romanus II. Both rulers are crowned and are grasping a Patriarchal cross (a slight variation of a traditional cross with two cross-bars at the top).
