About this coin

In addition to famous rulers and deities, many ancient Greek coins featured symbols important to the area in which they were minted. Such is the case with the "Boy Riding a Dolphin" coin. Minted in the Greek city of Taras, located in southern Italy, it recalls the myth of how the city was founded. Taras was the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and after the boy was lost at sea, a friendly dolphin rescued him and brought him back to the shore. The city where he landed was promptly named in Taras' honor. The obverse side of the coin features a soldier on horseback. Coins minted in Taras are especially well-known for having a greater variety of detail than nearly any other Greek coins.
