About this coin

Octavian, the grand-nephew of Julius Caesar, ascended to the position of ruler of the Roman world and was given the title "Augustus" by the Roman Senate. Many people date the beginning of the Roman Empire to his reign, making Caesar Augustus the first Roman Emperor. Among the changes he enacted during his long rule was a reform of the monetary system, which was designed to bolster trade. Coinage became more stable than at any other time in history. This silver denarius features the head of Augustus encircled by a laurel wreath along with his name (AVGVSTVS DIVI F). The reverse shows a picture of his grandson, Caius Caesar, on horseback with a sword and shield.
