About this coin

The owl, a symbol of wisdom and always closely associated with Athena (goddess of wisdom), appeared on Athenian coins for about 400 years. Naturally, artistic styles progressed over four centuries, but the owl itself was a constant. Though inhabited from prehistoric times, Athens didn't become a major metropolis until around 560 BC, and the earliest coins from the city are thought to have been minted around 550 BC. This coin was minted in Athens around 300 BC.
