About this coin

Alexander the Great of Macedon is still known today as the ultimate conqueror. In thirty-three short years, he came to rule a vast empire stretching from Greece to India. The design of this drachm - the head of Herakles (or Hercules) seen wearing a lion's skin headdress on the obverse and Zeus atop a throne clutching a scepter in one hand and an eagle in the other on the reverse - could be found all over Alexander's vast empire. The symbols perfectly represented Alexander: Herakles, the hero, and Zeus, a god. This design held up so well, in fact, that coins featuring these images continued to be minted for about 100 years after Alexander's death.
