About this coin

Alexander III (the Great) was born in Macedon, which was located in north central Greece. He inherited a somewhat large kingdom from his father, but by the time of Alexander's death at age 33, he had far surpassed the accomplishments of anyone previous, conquering much of the known world. He's still recognized as perhaps the greatest military leader of all time, though he was also well educated - by Aristotle, no less. Many silver coins minted during Alexander's reign, such as this drachm, feature a large portrait of Herakles (also called Hercules) wearing a lion's skin headdress on one side, with a picture of Zeus seated on a throne holding an eagle and scepter on the reverse.
