About this coin
There are many legends and symbols connected to Pegasus. His name means "spring" because it was said that everywhere his hoof landed, a well sprang forth. Though it's not an association that's well know today, this coin, which features Pegasus on the obverse and Athena wearing a Corinthian helmet on the reverse, recalls an important mythological story. The story recounts that the hero, Bellerophon, was able to capture Pegasus while the winged horse was drinking with a bridle given to him by Athena. This Corinthian-struck coin was made c. 450-300 BC.
